Where to live
If you're new to the region and not sure where to live, to help you narrow down your search here is some information about areas close to the University.
Newcastle is a vibrant city only two hours north of Sydney built around pristine beaches and harbour. While most students choose to live within walking distance to their choice of campus, Newcastle offers a multitude of interesting areas to consider.
Beach and City Living
If you want to live near the beach (even though it is 30 minutes by bus from the University), the suburbs to look at are:
- Bar Beach
- Cooks Hill
- Newcastle East
- The Junction
- The Hill
These suburbs are near the beaches, are close to or in the city of Newcastle and are within walking distance of Darby Street, known for its many cafes and restaurants.
Maryville, Wickham and Carrington are within the new Honeysuckle Development area, which is within cycling or walking distance of the city (approximately 20 to 25 minute walk to centre of the city).
Most of the above suburbs are within cycling or walking distance of the City Campus (Graduate School of Business) and are close to train stations with connections to the University.
Hamilton is another popular suburb and is halfway between the beaches and the University. Beaumont Street in Hamilton is popular because it is very cosmopolitan and has many restaurants.
Close to the Callaghan Campus
Suburbs within reasonable walking or cycling distance of Callaghan Campus include:
- Birmingham Gardens
- North Lambton
- Waratah West
Broadmeadow, Adamstown, Kotara, Mayfield and Georgetown are also suburbs which have good public transport and are not too far from either the City or Callaghan campuses.
Living on the Lake
Another option for you to consider is living in the suburbs around Lake Macquarie. There is a good bus service from such areas as Charlestown (11 km from Callaghan Campus) and Warners Bay (13 km from Callaghan Campus), and if you have a car it is only ten minutes to the beaches and the lake. However, this may not be the area of choice for some students as it is not close to the "hub" for those who enjoy the night life.
Situated between Sydney and Newcastle, Ourimbah is part of the Central Coast region of New South Wales. The Central Coast is one of the fastest growing areas in NSW and has the amenities of a major city combined with beautiful scenery and a relaxed holiday atmosphere. Although the beaches are reasonably close to the campus by car, approximately 20-25 minutes, it takes longer by public transport. Ourimbah is 97 kms north of Sydney and 88 kms south of Newcastle.
Close to the Ourimbah Campus
There are a number of properties available for renting in Ourimbah but they are taken very quickly.
Some of the suburbs on both a bus and train line are:
- Niagara Park
- Woy Woy
If you want to live near the beach (even though travel time by car can take up to 50 minutes and even more if you have to travel by bus or train), some of the suburbs to look at are:
- The Entrance
- Avoca Beach
